GUILTY PLEASURES
21 Jump Street: The Complete First Season ($39.98)
Long before Johnny Depp was Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean he was Officer Tom Hanson, the baby-faced, tail-kicking, undercover agent in 21 Jump Street, circa 1987. The 4-disc set has all 13 original episodes, four cast and crew interviews and commentary by costar Peter DeLuise. However, the guiltiest pleasure of this set is hearing Johnny Depp sing back-up on the '80s-pop theme song.
Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica: The First Season ($26.99)
There might be more important questions in life than whether the meat in Chicken of the Sea cans is fish or chicken, but few are so entertaining. If you've ever been tempted to take your Louis Vuitton bag camping, then this 2-disc set is perfect for you. It's everything that the 10-episode season was, plus exclusive interviews, music videos, biographies, and a "best of" reel packed with the moments that defined Nick and Jessica.
CARTOONS FOR GROWN-UPS
Family Guy: Freakin Sweet Collection ($19.98)
Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy, handpicked the five episodes that make up this DVD about a dysfunctional family with a martini-quaffing dog and a talking baby, "I'm a pompous little antichrist who will abandon my plans for world domination when I grow up and wind up settling with a rough trick named Jim." Or at least that's how the dog describes him. The DVD also comes with two interviews, four commentary tracks, including one by characters Stewie and Brian, and an inside look at MacFarlane's new series American Dad.
South Park: The Complete Fourth Season ($49.99)
There are many things very wrong with the humor of South Park, but somehow creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker manage to make it work. In 17 episodes of the vulgar, violent, and hilarious series about four young boys living in a small town in Colorado, the characters befriend wheelchair-bound Timmy, form a boy-band, and learn about Hell. Join Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny as they enter the 4th grade and try to put on the best Thanksgiving play ever: Helen Keller: The Musical, "No Timmy! The handicapped Turkey does not go in our play." Needless to say, they encounter some obstacles along the way.
Ren & Stimpy: The Complete First and Second Seasons: Uncut ($38.99)
When a neurotic Chihuahua and a simpleton housecat by the names of Ren and Stimpy first appeared on television, their humor was straight out of the toilet. Who else would devote an entire episode to Stimpy's first fart, Stinky, who grows up, leaves home, and gets married to a fishhead? This 3-disc set has 32 unedited episodes from the first two seasons of the show, including one episode than was never aired by Nickelodeon, plus six commentary tracks with the original creators.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Volume Three ($29.98)
A cartoon about a meatball named Meatwad, a milkshake named Master Shake, and an order of fries named Frylock starts off with a certain level of absurdiy included. So, when frat aliens crash-land on their lawn or Meatwad wants a kidney transplant, even though he doesn't need it, it just makes for better one-liners: "Look, I know it's shallow, but hey, I wants 'em. It's a status thing." Plus, the 2-disc set has 4 commentary tracks, deleted scenes, and ready-to-use outgoing answering machine messages.
strongbad_email.exe ($29.99)
This cartoon originated as a series of animations on the Internet about a dopey jock named Homestar Runner and his arch nemesis, a loveable badguy named Strongbad who answers fanmail at his computer when he isn't busy building robots or throwing parties. "Keep sending your emails and I will make fun of you," he cajoles. The 3-disc set contains the first 100 E-mails answered by Strongbad, complete with all of the easter eggs that made the Web versions so popular.
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
Napoleon Dynamite ($29.98)
Napoleon Dynamite is suave, "I see you're drinking 1% milk. Is that because you think you're fat?" He's dangerous, "I have all your equipment in my locker. You should probably come get it cause I can't fit my nunchucks in there anymore." He's on a mission to get his friend Pedro elected to class president.. This DVD is perfect for anyone who's ever laughed at the biggest dork in school or cheered him on.
The Hebrew Hammer ($19.99)
This holiday season make room in your library for the Hebrew Hammer, a self-proclaimed "certified circumcised private dick." When Santa Claus is overthrown by his anti-semetic son on a mission to destroy Chanukah, only one man can save the day. With the help of the Kwan za Liberation Front, clever disguises, and enough gags to give Airplane a run for its money, the Hebrew Hammer can't lose (even if he isn't an investment banker like his mother wanted). Plus, the DVD includes the darker, original short film by the same name. "Shabbat Shalom, mother f-ers."
Danny Deckchair ($26.98)
Danny Morgan is an average guy with an overactive imagination and little else going for him until he accidentally takes flight in a deckchair tied to giant helium balloons. Things start looking up when he crash-lands in a beautiful woman's backyard and gets the chance to reinvent himself. Danny Deckchair is a feel-good movie with an Australian accent, a little romance, and a lot of heart.
Hero ($29.99)
When granted audience with the emperor, a nameless soldier tells the tale of how he battled the most feared assassins in the land to reach his greatest enemy. In the spirit of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon this movie uses lightning fast swordplay and fantastic special effects to take you on a mystical martial arts epic of courage, revenge, and loyalty.
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: The Complete Epic Series ($89.98)
Grab your interstellar leisure suit and get ready to blast off to the year 2491. Packed with late-70s era kitch like butterfly collars and beanbag chairs, Buck polices the galaxy with his robot sidekick, Twiki and leading-lady Wilma. Together they save earth from a shady slave trader in "Planet of the Slave Girls," save Space Station Theta from the evil soul-sucking Vorvon in "Space Vampire," and much more on this 5-disc set, containing the entire television series and the original theatrical pilot.
